We have this week to record the death of another old and respected settler of the Clutha district. We refer to Mr Samuel Taylor of Riverside, Port Molyneux, who died on Friday forenoon, aged 69 years. The deceased was born at Derbyshire, England, and came to the colony twenty years ago. Shortly after his arrival he leased a farm on the river bank from Mr Telford for eight years. He afterwards purchased the farm and continued to reside on it up till his death. He never took any active part in public business, he devoting his whole attention to his farm and proving a kind and obliging neighbour. He married in the Home country and his wife died only about a year ago.

Their family consisted of five sons, two of whom died young three survive and are farmers in the district. The deceased had been ailing for a few months, and indeed seemed gradually to fail ever since bis wife's death. He was confined to bed for about a month and died on Friday, the cause being bronchitis and heart disease.

Death of Mr Wm. Falconer.

A sad accident, which resulted in the death of Mr Wm. Falconer, of Endsleigh, took place yesterday morning. Mr Falconer was driving a loaded dray into town, and when in Severn street, the shaft of the dray, which was swaying about, struck him and knocked him against the bank at the roadside. He struggled to regain his feet, but before he could do so the wheel of the dray passed over his body, inflicting such injuries that he died shortly afterwards. Mr J. Greenfield witnessed the accident, and immediately went for Dr Garland, but Mr Falconer was near his end when the doctor arrived. An inquest was held at the Junction Hotel in the afternoon, and particulars of the sad fatality will be found in the report of the proceedings.

Deceased was one of the oldest settlers in the district. Mr Falconer left Glasgow in the Storm Cloud in 1859, and arrived in Dunedin in the early months of 1860. On the l6th of June, 1860, he arrived in Oamaru, and after remaining some weeks in the place went back to Dunedin to procure plant to start in business as a blacksmith.

Mr Falconer in his well written letters to this paper, has described the early days of the settlement of Oamaru, and in following up this description a good insight can be obtained into the character of the work the early settlers had to undertake, and also of the work Mr Falconer himself had to do.

Mr Falconer remained in Oamaru for several years, engaged in the business of a blacksmith. In 1866 he removed to Otepopo, and there he remained for about 9 years, when having accumulated some money at his trade he left Otepopo to take up his farm of Endsleigh.

Mr Falconer was one of the most intelligent settlers in the district. His reading was extensive and varied, and he had a retentive memory, so that events that occurred in the "early days" were always fresh in his memory, and he could give day and date for many of the more prominent occurrences. Mr Roberts' History of Oamaru is enriched with Mr Falconer's account of the early days of the settlement.

Mr Falconer took a keen interest in public affairs, although he never aspired to a higher position than that of a member of a local body. He had been a member of the Oamaru Town Board, captain of the Otepopo Volunteers, a member of the Waiareka Road Board, and chairman of the Waiareka Licensing Committee.

Mr Falconer leaves a widow and 11 children to mourn their loss. One son is at Napier, another at Blenheim, and the other members of the family reside on the farm. There are few but regret the sudden termination to a useful career, and the expressions of sympathy for the bereaved family are wide-spread. Mr Falconer's life has been insured in the Australian Mutual Office for L1,000 for the past 18 years, and the added bonuses bring the amount up to L1,500.

Charles Martin operated in partnership with Albert Lawson from October 1875 at premises situated at the corner of Thames and Weir Streets, Oamaru. They announced in the North Otago Times their intention to open, "on or about the 2nd of October, a Suite of Rooms for the purpose of taking first-class Photographs."

This partnership was dissolved on 25 March 1876 and Charles Martin then took over the liabilities and debts of the partnership and continued in Oamaru under his own name. In 1899 Yerex and Truelove took over the business.

We observe that Mr Iles, Photographer, has produced photographs in connection with the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Masonic Hall, on Saturday last. The best is that taken on the return of the procession to the Lodge, immediately prior to breaking off. The likenesses of a large number of the brethren are there very clearly and distinctly taken. Mr Iles took two other photographs; one during the ceremony of laying the stone; and one when there were only a few on the spot; but these, from some cause or other, are not so satisfactory. Mr Pogonowski, we understand, took a photograph or two, but we do not know if he succeeded in bringing out a good picture of the seen.

Mr Iles, photographer, of this place, has shown us a number of views, recently taken by him in the Waitaki district. They appear one and all to be faithful copies, and demonstrate at once that our townsman is well up to his work in the art. Tho views taken at Otematata are first-rate and well chosen, and those taken at Rugged Ridges, Waitangi, Benmore, Lake Ohou (sic), Marewhenua, &c, likewise make beautiful pictures. Those who have visited the Waitaki should not fail to obtain copies of these photographs as "souvenirs" of the district.

Souvenirs of Oamaru. — We have had great pleasure in inspecting, at the studio of Mr Iles, photographer, a series of views of the town and bay. All have come out sharply and clear, and are, artistically, worthy of commendation.

One is a view of Oamaru from the N.W. This shows the Cape, the Masonic Hall, St. Paul's and St. Luke's Churches and the Bay, with the Albion lying at anchor.

No. 2, taken from the Cape, shews the whole town in landscape.

No. 3 is taken from the English Church, showing the Drill-shed, Cricket Ground, and Ropewalk.

No. 4, taken from Upper Tees-street, shews the business part of the town.

No. 5, a view of the Thames-street Bridge, the Bank of Otago, and the Council Chambers.

And No. 6, is a view taken from the Esplanade, showing the cottages at the west of the town, with Mr Hassell's windmill in the distance. Making altogether a series of truthful and picturesque views.

Otekaike House.— We have had the pleasure of inspecting a series of really beautiful views of the new mansion of the Hon. R. Campbell, at Otekaike, taken last week by Mr R. Iles, photographer. They are sharp, clear pictures, and as works of art do Mr Iles great credit. Two of them, taken on the same day, give the house and surroundings as they appear in summer and in winter respectively, a heavy fall of snow during the night having given the opportunity of taking a winter scene; and the snow having disappeared during the morning under the hot rays of the sun, the afternoon permitting the taking of a summer picture. This is a circumstance which seldom happens to the photographic artist, and deserves mention for its rarity.

Accident. — We understand that a Mr Reunert, a photographer, while riding from Oamaru to Kakanui Mouth, on Tuesday last, and, when near the mouth of the Awamoa, was thrown from his horse. Being rendered insensible by the fall he remembered nothing till he was found, some two hours afterwards, by a man in the employ of Mr Aitkenhead, his face covered with blood and his head very much contused, leading to the belief that he had been dragged in the stirrups. He was brought into town in a dray and attended to by Dr Wait, and is, we are glad to learn, progressing favorably.

Instantaneous Photography.

Photography has made rapid strides during the last three or four years, and nowadays the art can be practised by candle or lamplight with as favourable results as not many years ago attended its prosecution in the brightest sunlight. In one of the English cities we read recently of the scenes upon a stage being taken as the play progressed, this being achieved by means of the electric light. Another direction in which most important advances have been made is in taking photographs by the instantaneous process. In one of the Home journals recently was published a series of cuts showing all the various positions assumed by a horse at full gallop, reproduced from photographs actually taken; and the movements shown were altogether opposed to the general notions of the way galloping is performed, and made it apparent that the ordinary picture of a horse in that gait is very far removed indeed from the reality.

A railway-train, going at the rate of nearly a mile a minute, has also been successfully photographed, the time occupied in the operation being some where about l-300th of a second; and so exact did every smallest detail about the train come out that to all appearance the picture had been taken when the train was at an absolute standstill.

In the Colonies the instantaneous process has not been, practised to any extent; but Mr Clifford of the Royal Arcade, has made a number of experiments (with apparatus of his manufacture principally, or at any rate made in Dunedin to his order) with very considerable success. It is hard to say exactly what space of time is consumed in the operation because it can only be computed by comparison. A spring-shutter is used to close the camera, and the view is taken whilst this shutter is in the act of closing. The method of computation is by first determining the length of opening which, could be shut off in say, half a second; then knowing that the duration of time can be reckoned in which a much smaller opening could be shut off by a spring of the same force. The views Mr Clifford has taken are street subjects, and they come out with great clearness and exactitude. A horse with its rider, although cantering at the time of operation, is as clear as if standing still the only difference being that one or two of its legs are off terra firma; man is seen to be stepping; a lad is crossing the street evidently at a run; a carriage and pair is being driven by, which one could well believe, except for the attitude of the horses, was actually not in motion; and so on. The views are highly interesting as showing the development of photographic art, and are highly suggestive of the possibilities yet to be achieved.

Relics of Otara Reef. - We have had an opportunity of seeing the negatives taken by Mr Henry, photographer, of the remains of several of the passengers and crew of the Tararua. These exhibit fearful traces of the violence of the surf to which they have been exposed, and it is no wonder that Mr Henry was noways loth to cease his operations. In addition to these he has secured negatives of the beach opposite the wreck, with the chief mate and one of the seamen standing among the debris. As showing the violence of the surf on the fatal night, Mr Henry was able to place his camera at highwater between the edge of the surf and the debris in order to get this view. The wreckage, he thinks, was thrown 20 yards higher on the beach than the edge of the surf as it appeared at the time of his visit. Other views are those of the boat which came ashore with the first mate in charge, and also the police engaged in diving under the lee of the cabin doors of the lost steamer. Mr Henry says that he had to work under great difficulties. The high wind was very troublesome; water was scarce, as evidenced by the fact that, he had to content himself with one bucketful for all his operations, an attempt to use a waterhole in his processes resulting in the destruction of a fine negative. The results of his journey were placed before the public on Saturday evening last. He has also brought with him a relic in the shape of the "curl" of the cabin stair rail of the ship. Small as this is it is split, and the iron straps used for strengthening it torn asunder.

Huge Grain Stacks. — We were yesterday shown several capital photographs by Messrs Coxhead and Sargeant, of the huge piles of grain now stacked on Messrs P. Cunningham and Co.'s premises, comprising, in all, some 50,000 sacks. We understand that copies of these photographs are to be sent to the Sydney Exhibition, and they will go far towards giving foreigners an idea of our wonderful resources.

Congregational Sunday School. — An entertainment was given last evening in the Congregational Church, North street, consisting of dissolving views show by the aid of lime light. The representations were the Arctic Regions, Cruikshank's pictures of "The Bottle," views of the Holy Land, and a variety of beautiful bush and waterfall scones in the North Island (kindly lent by Messrs Coxhead and Sargeant), together with a variety of views of local interest. These were photographs of the Main South Road, the Timaru Breakwater, the new Congregational and St. Mary's Churches, the public school, the windmill, &c. Several hymns were sung by the scholars, and two hymns set to music on the canvas were sung by all present. Some pleasant surprise and amusement was caused by showing the portraits of two persons well known to be connected with the church and school. Hearty votes of thanks were given by the audience who seemed delighted with their evening's entertainment.

We have been shown a panoramic view of Oamaru, photographed by Messrs Ferrier and Rock, of Thames street. Oamaru ranks amongst the most beautiful of the towns of New Zealand, and the photographers have done full justice to it, inasmuch as they place before the public a good picture and a correct view of what Oamaru is like at the present time. The view includes the whole of the town, and was taken from the hill on the west side of Reed street. The picture is one unbroken view of the town, and can be made to occupy a very small space, owing to its being arranged to fold into a size of six inches by four inches. This feature is intended to lessen the danger incidental to sending larger photographic views by post. As a view of Oamaru it is well worth the purchasing, if not to send Home, at least for its artistic merit.

We had the pleasure yesterday of inspecting some very nice photographs of the waterworks, taken by Messrs Ferrier and Rock of this town. There were about half a dozen in number, and represent the principal points of interest, from the settling pounds at the river to the reservoir. The Awamoko aqueduct is an excellent picture, and is perhaps the best of the series, though they are all remarkably good and true to nature . The picture likely to prove of most interest, that of the splendid aqueduct in Frews Gully, is not yet finished. The views are cabinet size, and well-worthy the inspection of amateurs.

Fire in Wear Street.

At about half-past one o'clock this morning, a fire broke out in the premises occupied by Robert Keenan, in Wear street, and resulted in the total destruction of the building, besides doing considerable damage to those adjoining. The alarm was first given by a man named Charles Lawson, who was living in the house occupied by Keenan. He was suddenly roused from sleep by a choking sensation, and found the bedroom, which was on the upper floor, full of smoke. Rousing the other inmates, he jumped out of the window and ran down the street, when he met with the police who were on night duty, and to them he communicated the intelligence.

Constable Jackson at once went to the spot, an found the flames coming out of the front portion of the building, used as a shop, and from observations which he afterwards made, he concluded that it was in that part that the fire originated, A number of people soon gathered, and Keenan's furniture, together with the stock in Mr James's Venetian blind manufactory, next door, and the papers, books, &c, in Mr Hardy's office, were safely taken out. The fire spread with great rapidity, and soon caught the roof of Messrs Lintott and Otterson's malthouse, which was divided from Keenan's by a narrow right-of-way, and communicated with the photographic studio of Farrier and Rock, above Mr James's shop, which was also detached from the burning building.

The Fire Brigade shortly arrived, and although some difficulty was experienced in getting water, the engine soon extinguished the fire in the malthouse, and the hose was then brought to bear on Mr Hardy's building. The supply of water which had been obtained from a tank at the rear of Bailie & Humphrey's then failed, and much time was lost in getting a fresh supply. This was ultimately obtained, and in a little more than an hour from the time of the first alarm the fire was under command.

The brigade behaved splendidly, and much credit is due to them for the way in which they worked in the face of the great disadvantage caused by scarcity of water. The full extent of the damage cannot yet be ascertained. Keenan's house, which was the property of the creditors in Mr Kite's estate, being built of wood, was totally destroyed, but the damage done to the adjoining buildings was chiefly to the flooring and roofs, and could not, at the time of going to press, be accurately estimated. The injury to the malthouse is only trifling. The buildings, and it is believed the furniture and stocks were insured, but for what amounts could not be ascertained.

Messrs Ferrier and Rook will be heavy losers, most of the negatives, chemicals, and many of the fixtures being destroyed. Regarding the manner in which the fire originated nothing beyond what has been stated could be elicited. Keenan was away at the time, and the inmates say they were all fast asleep.

The Trinity Wesleyan Church, Dunedin, has for over thirty years been the headquarters of Methodism in Otago. The church stands at the corner of Stuart Street and Moray Place, and is an attractive and solid-looking building. It is built of blue stone, with white Oamaru stone facings, supported by strong buttresses, and adorned with ornamental windows and minarets. The basement below the church is used as the Sunday school, and for various classes. The church was opened for divine worship on the 10th of July, 1870, when the Rev. A. R. Fitchett, now Dean Fitchett, were the officiating ministers. The building and site represent a total cost of about £5,000. The church manse is situated in York Place. The Rev. A. R. Fitchett, the late Rev. J. Berry, Rev. W. Morley, Rev. J. J. Lewis are some of the ministers who have held the pastorate of Trinity Church.

Expedition to Milford Sound.

THE SUTHERLAND WATERFALL. Mr C. W. Adams (chief surveyor) and party left Dunedin for the Bluff yesterday, whence they will proceed by the U.S.S. Company's steamer Ohau to Milford Sound for the purpose of making a reconnaissance survey of the country between the head waters of the sound and Lake Te Anau.

One of the objects of the expedition is to measure the height of the Sutherland fall, which is said to be about 4000 ft high. This is probably an exaggerated statement, but should the fall be only half this height it will still be the highest in the world. Up to the present time no one has ever been able to get from Milford Sound to Te Anau, but a strong effort will be made by Mr Adams' party to find a passable track, although it is rather early in the season for mountain exploration.

Mr Thomas Mackenzie (M.H.R. for the Clutha) and Mr W. S. Pillans are accompanying the expedition. Both these gentlemen are experienced Bushmen, and their exploring trip through the Tutuku forest from Catlin's river to Waikawa, which they made a few years ago, will be remembered by many of our readers. Two parties of photographers are going by the same boat, one on behalf of Messrs Burton Bros, and the other from Mr Morris' establishment, so that before very long the people of Dunedin will have an opportunity of judging for themselves how far rumour is correct with regard to the height of the Sutherland waterfall.

Mr. Adams expects to be absent from Dunedin about a month, but a great deal, will of course depend on the weather, which is frequently very unsettled in the vicinity of the sounds. Before leaving Mr Adams called on the leading seedsmen, of Dunedin, and in every case his request for useful garden seeds was met in a most liberal spirit. He intends to plant these seeds in every available spot he visits. In addition to the seeds he is taking raspberry, strawberry, and other plants. His forethought in connection with this matter is highly commendable, and future visitors will no doubt reap the benefit of his labours. In the early days of the colony it used to be a rule with the Maoris and settlers of the North Island whenever they ate a peach to plant the stone. In consequence of this groves of peach trees are now met with in most out of the way places in the North Island. This is a hint which might with advantage he acted on by tourists who visit the sounds on the annual excursions by the Union Company's boats. Cuttings, plants of various kinds, seeds, nuts, &c., might be taken and planted with very little trouble. Even when eating an apple tourists would do some good by planting the pips. Roses, geraniums, and fuchias, if planted, would also be useful in adding to the beauty of these very picturesque parts.

Mr Morris' party are taking with them a canvas boat of a novel construction with which to navigate the waters of Lake Ada and Milford Sound. Altogether the expedition is, likely to prove a most interesting one, and the return of the travellers will be awaited with considerable interest. Messrs Mackenzie and Pillans will probably return overland by way of Martin's Bay.

Regarding the Sutherland Falls, it may be mentioned that they have only been seen by four men — viz. : Messrs Donald Sutherland, the hermit of Milford Sound; his mate, Mackay; Mr S. H. Morton, artist, Invercargill ; ,and Mr W. P. Hart, photographer, also of Invercargill. The fall was discovered by Sutherland and his mate on November 10, 1880. They estimated its height at between 4000 and 5000 feet, though they did not get nearer than within two miles of it, and the bottom was hidden from their view. About two years afterwards Messrs' Morton and Hart made an attempt to get to the fall, but they found the travelling very rough, and their provisions failing and bad weather coming on they were unable to get a nearer view of it than Sutherland. Mr Hart, however, took a photograph on March 9, 1883, and named it the" Sutherland Waterfall." Mr Hart estimated the height of the fall at about 4500 ft, and its volume five times that of the Bowen Fall, which is of no inconsiderable size, and has hitherto been considered the highest fall in New Zealand. Men have been employed for some time past cutting a track to the fall, so that before long tourists will be able to proceed thither.

The approximate distances are: — From the Bowen Waterfall to the head of Milford Sound, two miles by boat; thence through the bush, two miles on foot; thence across Lake Ada, six miles by boat; and up the river, above the head of Lake Ada, two miles by boat; then again, along a bush track about eight or ten miles on foot to the Sutherland Fall — 20 miles in all, or about a day's journey. The highest waterfall in the world is believed to be one in the Pyrenees Mountains, which is 1300 ft high, but contains only a small volume of water.

PHOTOGRAPHY; LOCAL V. WHITEWASHED YANKEE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,- The term whitewashed Yankee is given to a man (gratis) who pretends to be an American, but who is not not. Last year a certain individual came travelling the Tuapeka district with a covered waggon taking photos of people's houses, etc., (a sort of a shilling a card trade) who then hailed direct from Nelson. The same individual has now blossomed out into the American Photo Co., from Wellington. I happen to possess the acquaintance of every photographer in Wellington during the past eight years and during that time no such name of firm has been in business there; a name apparently adopted since arrival in Balclutha as it sounded greater than his own, and some people are so easily carried away by a flowing name. Now what I am writing this letter for is not to find fault with their misleading title exactly but merely to vindicate myself from some of the insinuations which they or some of their touts (evidently some one photographed on the cheap, who feel grateful) are spreading the report that their work is vastly superior to mine, that I only come from Milton, etc., is very weak chaff indeed. I claim the honour of being able with truth to say that I have had nine years practical experience in two of the largest studios in Toronto and Bellville, Canada, before coming to New Zealand, and have settled in Milton duriug the past two years. The new American system which they claim to be introducing is so new that I learned it nearly 11 years ago. As I propose returning to Balclutha at an early date and probably making my headquarters there, I claim the right of a local man to warn the people against being misled by such false statements. — I am etc., J. Mr J. H. Yerex has just returned from a week's tour through the Catlins district as far as Houipapa. He obtained a goodly collection of photos comprising settlers' homesteads, groups of men road making, river scenes, etc. Returning by Port Molyneux he secured a photo of a bottle-nose whale 21ft in length which was stranded on the beach near the mouth of the Clutha on Tuesday evening, and first discovered by Mr J. Tulloch. A second photo was taken during the process of cutting up the blubber, surrounded by a group of spectators. These photos will be on exhibition at Mr Yerex's studio in the course of a day or two.

Ferntree Lodge, Dunedin

This house is Dunedin’s oldest surviving house and the only ferntree house still occupied in New Zealand. The house is reputed to have been built in 1849 just a year following the settlement of Dunedin. The quaint cottage, with its medieval appearance, is probably best known as the home of the Thomson family, whose mineral waters and soft drinks were once the toast of Dunedin. In the early 1900’s the house was extended into two separate houses which were linked by a billiards room and a shared entrance. It extended from a five bedroom cottage into a 20 room house. In the 1970’s the house and grounds slipped into disrepair after a failed bid to turn it into a Tavern complex. It was the Dunedin City Council which came to the houses rescue in 1980 and they completed some general upgrading to bring the house back to its original enchanting state. The house is and the surrounding 10 acre section is located in a woodland setting and although the once long tree lined drive way has been replaced by the extension of Wairoa Street, the house still keeps its appeal as a private piece of real estate. The house is now back in private ownership and is still defying the sceptics who believe that to be permanent, a house must be built of stone or brick.

This 2-storey dwelling, on the north west frontier of Dunedin, had been built in 1849 and bought by Alexander Thomson in a dilapidated state in 1898. The outer wall was of squared fern tree trunks from the original forest with clay packed in the interstices. It was renovated for Alexander by his brother-in-law, John White, who also added
a much grander 2-storey brick house, completed in 1902. Fern tree House was to be Bill Thomson's home for the rest of his life, while the large house was occupied by his mother, accompanied from time to time by various sons and daughters.

He was just approaching an ugly bend in the decline, when his chain slipped off and his bike got out of control. Fortunately he struck a rut, which upset him before the most dangerous point was reached, and he escaped with a severe shaking and a few scratches about the face.

Re Alexander Thomson.
A meeting of creditors in the estate of Alexander Thomson, photographer, of Alexandra, was held before the official assignee (Mr W. S. Fisher) on Tuesday, 15th inst. The bankrupt's scheduled statement showed total debts £157 17s; asset, £22 13s consisting of book debts (£l2 12s) and furniture (£10). The principal unsecured creditors were Wilkie and Co. (£30), P. Hayman and Co. (£20), Smith and Smith (£l0). Ahlfeld Bros. (£5), Ward Bros. (£25 5s). The amounts due to other unsecured creditors, 24 in number, ranged from £6 downwards.

The bankrupt's statement showed that he commenced business at Lawrence in 1902 with about £25 capital. The expense was too heavy, and his affairs began to go back steadily. He tried hard to get out of the place, but had not the necessary money. In 1908 he left Lawrence for Roxburgh, and thence went to Alexandra. Little business offered, and when an order on a judgment summons was taken out he was compelled to file. He had a wife and family dependent on him, and had a struggle to make a living. He had not the money for his fare to Dunedin, so could not attend the meeting.

The case was regarded as hopeless, and the meeting broke up without passing a resolution.

Sir, — About two months ago I was sent for in great haste to photograph the dying daughter of a railway employe (sic) named Campbell, residing at Paddy's Point - a distance of some six or seven miles from Lawrence. I obeyed the summons though it was half-past three o'clock on a Sunday afternoon; and without, observing the golden rule among most Photographers - namely, payment in advance. I arrived at Campbell's residence about half-past five; had then to construct from his drawing-room what is technically called a dark-room for chemical purposes; took three negatives of the girl whom I found in bed propped up with pillows, her head leaning on her hands, swaying to and fro, unable to speak or keep still for more than a second or two at a time. This part of the work took me fully two hours. I then walked to Havelock, engaged an express for the return journey to Lawrence, which I did not reach before twelve that night, and at a cost of ten shillings. I supplied to Campbell from the best of the three negatives I had taken a dozen and a half of very fair Cartes de Visite (under the circumstances) of his dying child, and half a dozen at his own request from one of the two others, and which were the ones he returned after being summoned and three weeks after having previously seen proofs from all three. When this troublesome and unpleasant work had been performed, I applied to Mr Campbell for payment of my bill, which was only £3, including travelling expenses. All I could obtain from him was one pound for which I had to go again to Paddy's Point, entailing on me more travelling expenses. Well, sir, at this stage of the proceedings applied to the' Magistrate's Court at Lawrence for redress, and they awarded me £1 more; so that in reality I obtained less than 30s, deducting expenses for the second journey to Paddys Point. Poor remuneration truly! What a pity for me the Magistrates had not known the trouble of making photographs under such circumstances. - I am, &c,

TOWN IMPROVEMENTS. THE MORA STUDIO.

Mr R. Rodger, of the Mora Photographic Studio, Main Street, has just entered into possession of his new suite of apartments comprising portion of the upstairs of Messrs McGruer and Co.'s handsome block of buildings at the corner of Main and Mersey streets. The principal feature of Mr Rogers'(sic) premises is a splendidly appointed studio 24ft by 15ft. The lighting properties of the apartment are perfect, being secured by means of a large window and skylight occupying the greater portion of the southern wall. Leading into the studio is a roomy dressing apartment 15ft by 9ft. The reception room and "dark" room are both admirably suited to their purpose and a couple of work rooms at the rear make up a most excellently appointed establishment. Entrance to Mr Rodger's premises is gained by a stairway (at the front of which is a handsome vestibule for the display of frames of specimens of the photographic art), in Main street. More than a passing word of praise is due to the contractor (Mr O. Kelly) for the excellent finish visible in all the work that has come within his jurisdiction in the building and its appointments.

An enlarged photograph of great historical interest to Gore residents, is now on view in the vestibule of Mr R. Rodger's Mora studio. This is a picture of the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Gore Town Hall some 20 years ago. This was performed by Bro. H. Feldwick (Invercargill) with full Masonic honors, and among the brethren to be seen in the photo are many figures well-known locally. Some of these have since gone the way of all flesh, but most are still in the land of the living, and as in the old days, so now, are prominent citizens. In the foreground.of the photo are to be seen a number of children — children of that time, who are, in many instances, the men and women of Gore to-day. The original of this interesting picture was taken by Mr Carl Hagen, of Gore.

John William Rock was born in Islington, London in 1848 (1) the son of John Dennis Rock, a tin and tin plate merchant and his wife Emma Guard. The 1851 census shows the family at 46 Park Street, Islington. John Dennis Rock who was born in Birmingham is then aged 48 years and Emma Rock who was born in Devizes, Wiltshire is 31 years old. The census also shows one other child, a daughter Lydia Rock who is aged 9 months. Also at 46 Park Street are two servants, Sarah Jones and Margaret Sleigh.(2) The 1861 census shows the family at Blackburn House in Southgate, Middlesex. John William Rock is twelve years old, his father was then aged 58 years, his occupation is a merchant.

John William Rock married Dorothea Mackay Fraser on 30 June 1876 at the First Church, Dunedin. He was then aged 28 years and Dorothea was aged 25 years.(3) There were at least three children of the marriage:

PHOTOGRAPHIC PICTURES OF OTAGAN SCENERY.

We have on previous occasions called attention to the arduous task undertaken by Mr Joseph Perry, photographic artist — that of obtaining 100 views of scenery in the Province; and we have described the progress made and its results. Two or three months ago, Mr Perry sent down to Dr Hector, 35 views, making, with those then in the Exhibition, about 50. He has now returned to town with about 50 more, including a dozen which he had found it desirable to re-take, and he will complete the 100 negatives by selecting strikingly fine points of view in the neighborhood of Dunedin, and there planting his camera. Mr Perry has frequently had tryingly hard times, while waiting for suitable weather for "taking" some particular bit of scenery which was too good to be passed by, or while endeavoring to get his "dark room and other apparatus long tracks which had never before been pressed by any fourwheeled vehicle, and probably will not be so pressed again for years, unless some other equally ardent photographer goes over the same ground. But Mr Perry has the satisfaction of knowing that he has all but absolutely carried out the programme prepared with the aid of Dr Hector's intimate knowledge of the interior of the Province; and that the programme was so prepared is the best possible guarantee that all the characteristic features of our great ranges, plains, rivers, &c, have been included in the tour which Mr Perry has made. The majority of the views which we mentioned in our previous notice, were taken in the Shag Valley direction, or between it and the coast. Those which Mr Perry has now brought down are most varied in character, but are, almost without exception, excellent specimens of photography. We may first mention a view of the coal-pit at Green Island, and the surrounding country; one of the famous Cherry Farm, near Waikouaiti; and another of the new bridge at East Taieri. Looking over a number of the other photographs, one may almost be said to make a very pleasant tour through some of the best known and the most romantic parts of the Province. We can examine the architecture displayed by the main street at Tokomairiro, with the square-towered church in the distance, duly faced by the White Horse Hotel. The Woolshed diggings; Waitahuna, with a good stretch of the township shown; Wetherstone's Flat, with the Government storm-water channel, full and glistening; Wetherstone's township ; the famous Blue Spur ; the township of Lawrence (Tuapeka), settled and thriving in look; and the still famous Gabriel's Gully, taken from the top of the Blue Spur— all these, with their surroundings, go to form a capital epitome of our older diggings and what they look like. Then we can pass to the crossing place at the Beaumont, with its substantial double-punt, and seemingly well- formed approach; to Mount Benger district, as seen from the top of Moa Flat, a fine reach of the Molyneux being included in the picture; and to the Teviot's junction with the Molyneux, there being some fine rocks for a young artist's study. What our miners can do, by association, is shown in the gigantic — it really is so — fluming across the Manorburn, constructed by the Rose, Shamrock, and Thistle Sluicing Company; the work being 800 ft. long, and at one point 90ft. high, a considerable portion of it being built in two heights, and the whole looking like an attenuated railway viaduct on a large scale. The water is brought from the Manuherikia. Alexandra (Manuherikia township) comes next, and a good picture it makes, the junction of the two rivers being capitally shown. Put this view aside, and we are at Clyde (the Dunstan township) - not in it, but looking at it across the river, and seeing, high up upon the bank, only a long compact line of wooden dwellings, towered over by a bluff hill, and with the entrance to the Gorge looking frowningly in the distance. From the township, we leap to the Pioneer Sluicing Company's claim, and see the manager and one of his men standing by the long sluice box, a sea of debris spreading around them, and the face of the spur serried and rough at their back. We go upon an inspection of the works of the Company, by means of three views, one of which shows a good stretch of fluming, with the manager's tent, and another being a really splendid rock study. Now we descend to Hartley's Beach, whence the discoverers of the Dunstan took so much of that 87lb weight of fine gold, the story of which turned the heads of the Dunedinites, and of many others, in August and September, 1862; and we see a broad line leading down to the beach, which line (says Dr Hector) shows the old bed of the rich and capricious Molyneux. Put away Hartley's Beach, and you are at Hill's Bridge, over the Kawarau, a poor, fragile-looking thing, but one that was a great boon when erected. It is dwarfed into more marked insignificance by a series of great stone piers in the foreground of the picture. They were built by day-work, under the Government, and are said to have cost vastly more in money, and to have taken up very much more time, than, was needed for the strongest of bridges or for the work actually done. The bridge exists now, we believe, or is nearly completed; but Hill's Bridge, as a personal venture, was a greatly useful work. The view includes part of Cromwell (Kawarau township), seen on the hill to the left; but the next picture shows the township itself, and exhibits strikingly the "terraces" of the locality. Now, we are looking down the river instead of up, but we still see the bridge and the piers; and here on the right are the three buildings forming "the Camp" at Cromwell. Here is the claim of the Great Extended Company, near the Kawarau Gorge; and in this view, as well as in three or four others which follow, we see striking examples of rocks and equally striking example of the skill and boldness of our miners in carrying out their "flumes." The instances here are of suspended fluming; and some of these canvas pipes or troughs carry several " heads" of water. We leave the works of the miners and see something of their ways — or the tracks they have to form and to follow in moving about the country. Here is Roaring Meg "township," as it is called, shut in by huge hills, and resting upon a bank close above a couple of forks of the Kawarau. We next come upon Roaring Meg itself, a magnificent specimen of something between a waterfall and a mountain torrent. We are standing just above the bridge; and, looking up at the sheer descent of the stream, we can fancy the roar and the seethe with which it tears along between those sharp rocks and those water-rounded boulders. Shift the scene, and we are at the "natural bridge" across the Kawarau. The stream is just low enough to allow this " bridge" to be used. It is no bridge, however. A great tongue of rock protrudes towards another tongue; between them, the river goes at a pace that makes any mill race contemptible; close at hand is a great pool, whirling, but smooth, and terribly deep. Step or leap from one tongue to the other; land safely; and you have crossed the "natural bridge" on the Kawarau. There, further back, you a see a couple of seeming sticks stretching across a chasm. The lowest of them is 20ft. or 30ft. above the "natural bridge," but when the river is high, you get across" by walking on the lower of the two sticks — they are manuka poles — and holding by the upper one. If your eyes are good, you may see the faintest of lines on the photograph, above those poles. It indicates that a rope hangs there. Yes, that is the "road." You haul yourself up the racks by means of the rope, and get round to the track from the "natural bridge." Two other views show some fine bold scenery on the Kawarau; and a third introduces us to the Gentle Annie burn, just at the point where the bridge is being erected on "the road to Fox's." Another shift, and we are far up the Molyneux on the road to Wanaka Lake. This pleasantly romantic looking scene is known as the Devil's Nook, or the rapids above Sandy Point. The junction of the Lugget burn is shown; and in that still looking pool to the right, great quantities of timber, which is being floated down from the Lake, lie embayed for weeks together. Lake Wanaka during a storm, is an effective picture, though it is somewhat misty, grass being burning on one of the hills at the time the view was taken. The succeeding view is of the Matukituki river, which flows into Wanaka. The reflection of the hills in the water is beautifully reproduced: indeed all the views of this lake possess this charming peculiarity, which makes them richly worthy of study by an artist. We have next a fine picture of Mount Aspiring, 9949 ft high, and perpetually snow clad. A peep at the home station on Thomson's run introduces us to three or four views from this neighborhood, which are, artistically, we think, about the best of the series. In one of them, Pigeon Island is seen in the foreground; and the reflection of this rounded isle in the smooth waters of the Lake is perfect as an artistic effect. The other two are still better pictures, and one of them possesses all the delicacy of a finished engraving of the highest class, The whole series of photographs is of public interest, as being the first collection of "Illustrations of the Scenery of Otago;" and we think it will not be questioned that there is almost unlimited scope for the gratification of varied tastes, in the selection of the ten views to which each subscriber of three guineas is to be entitled. - Otago Witness, Issue 712, 21 July 1865, Page 4

DUNEDIN, Monday. Herman Prince died suddenly at his lodgings in Cumberland street on Saturday afternoon, it is supposed from his having taken an overdose of chlorodyne. For some time past deceased had complained of severe headaches, and on Friday night he complained of his head being very bad. Mrs Mitchell, from whom he rented rooms, suggested that he should see a doctor. He replied that he knew what to take, and went to his own room. On the following day Mrs Mitchell heard deceased snoring heavily, and as he did not get up, she became alarmed and accompanied by Mr Margett, entered his room at about two o'clock on Saturday. Deceased was then sleeping heavily, and no attempt was made to rouse him. Later on Mrs Mitchell again looked into his room, and seeing that his appearance had greatly changed, she thought he was dead, and at once went to report the circumstance to the police. An empty two ounce phial was found on the washstand, and it is supposed that deceased died from an overdose of chlorodyne. Prince was a photographer, unmarried, and has no relatives in the colony. At the inquest the verdict was — "Poisoned by chloral, but there is no evidence to show how it was administered." - Southland Times, Issue 4429, 19 September 1882, Page 2

Photographs of His Excellency and his Aides-de-camp.— We have been shown by Messrs Nicholas Brothers, photographs of His Excellency the Marquis of Normanby, and of his aides-de-camp Lord Hervey Phipps and Lieutenant Le Patourel. The artists have succeeded in producing likenesses faultlessly true to the originals, and the portraits possess a distinctness of expression which is not always attainable. The Governor's good-natured face is portrayed (sic) with particular truthfulness. Lord Hervey Phipps and Lieut. Le Patourel have been taken together and also separately, and in both cases the photographer has succeeded in producing fine portraits.

We yesterday had the opportunity of inspecting the building at present in course of erection for Mr R. J. Nicholas, photographer, of Dee street. The structure when completed, which will be an accomplished fact tomorrow, will be one of the most magnificent of its kind in the colony, and it has been erected, in a manner worthy alike of the contractor, Mr Davey, and the architect, Mr Burwell. The entrance to the studio is from Dee street. Entering, we find ourselves in the waiting room, which is a compact room on the second floor of the building. We may here, remark that the building is a three storey one, the two upper storeys being occupied by Mr Nicholas. Adjoining this are the ladies' dressing rooms, and immediately opposite is the gentlemen's waiting room. Then comes the work-room, a building specially, adapted to the purpose, for which it is designed, and constructed with all the latest improvements. Mounting by a flight of stairs we enter the galleries, two in number, and which we venture to say cannot be equalled for general convenience or adaptability. They are well lighted by two magnificent glass windows, embracing both the north and south light, and when it is stated that it requires 100 yards of blinds to cover these enormous windows some little idea may be gleaned as to the light which finds its way into the galleries. The windows are erected at a very large cost, and will be found to answer all requirements. The "dark room" is well ventilated and in every way complete. These rooms comprise the studio, and they have been erected at a large expense, and in the most finished manner possible, and will, no doubt, in time amply repay the energetic proprietor. In the old studio Mr Nicholas has on view a number of beautifully executed specimens, of the photographer's art; these are admirably finished and represent a number of well-known citizens. The portraits of several children are splendidly taken, and it is surprising that such life-like and natural carte-de-visites can; be got of these ever restless individuals. Altogether, the portraits are equal to those generally produced by Home photographers.

Photography. — Two excellent specimens of the photographer's art were shown to us yesterday by Mr R. J. Nicholas, of the London Portrait Rooms, Dee street. The pictures, which are of a large size, 6 by 9 inches, are worthy of all praise from an artistic point of view, conveying, evidently, minutely accurate representations of the scenes they depict, and being finished in every respect in a very high-class style. But apart from the general interest attaching to them an (sic) account of their intrinsic merit, they will attract special attention in consideration of their exhibiting the features of a spot in our neighborhood towards which many eager eyes are at present turned. Both photos are views of Printz's claim, Longwood. One of them shows the entrance to the drive, a bit of tramway, a group of workmen, &c, &c, with a background of virgin bush; the other displays the progress made in the erection of the crushing machinery; a perfect maze of beams and spars, with artisans at work upon and about it. To those who have not visited the Longwood, the pictures will convey a very accurate idea of the magnitude of the operations now in progress there, and of the difficulties under which they are being carried on. - Southland Times , Issue 3674, 3 April 1880, Page 2

In a private note which accompanied General Sir George White's letter to us, which we publish in another column, Mr Alex. Garden, Waitahuna, writes:— "If any of Sir George's countrymen in Lawrence would like to see his letter you might please let them peruse it." — Considering, as everybody must, that anything connected with a man Who has shown such nobility of character, apart altogether from his military genius and devotion to duty, must prove interesting. We had the letter photographed by Mr W. R. Millar, photographer, next to the Tuapeka Times Office, in whose window it may be seen this evening. We might mention that Mr Millar, with true patriotic spirit, did the work as a labor of love and did it well.

Mr W. A.(sic) Millar notifies elsewhere that he has removed his place of business from Peel street to Ross Place, where, having premises more adapted to his business, he expects to be able to command an increased measure of support. In his old premises, in addition to being off the principal business street, Mr Millar labored under great disadvantages— the studio not having been designed to secure the best results in the matter of lighting — a most important thing in the art of photography. His present premises, which are situated in a good prominent position in Ross Place, have been fitted up according to his own ideas, with the result that the very best effects can be got. A feature of the new premises is that the acetylene gas installation has been put in, thus enabling photographs to be taken in the evening. The studio is nicely fitted with all the necessary paraphernalia usually to be found in the best photographic studios Mr Millar's enterprise will no doubt meet with the reward it deserves.

MR W. R. MILLAR, who has been engaged in the photographic business in Lawrence during the past few years, leaves to-day for Rotorua, where be has received an appointment under the Government as assistant electrical engineer in connection with the Sanataria at that place. During his residence in Lawrence Mr Millar identified himself with the Fire Brigade and with the Orchestral Society and Brass Bond. On Monday evening he was presented with a silver pencil ease by the members of the Fire Brigade.

Dissolution of Partnership

Notice is hereby given that the partnership hitherto existing between William R. Millar and Herbert D. Austin Photographers, and carried on under the style or name of Millar and Austin in Peel-street, Lawrence, has this day been dissolved by mutual consent.
The business will in future be carried on by the aforesaid William R. Millar upon his own account, who will pay all accounts owing by and receive all moneys due to the late firm.

Photography - A gentleman who was at one time a resident of this town has, after a lapse of some 14 years, returned and cast in his lot with the people of Invercargill "for good." We refer to Mr Thomas Muir, who at the period referred to was in charge of the telegraph department here, before the amalgamation of that branch of the public service with the Postal Department. Mr Muir is in a different business, however, now, having during his long absence pursued the art of the photographer, and been for a number of years a partner in the well known firm of Burton Brothers, Dunedin. Mr Muir has succeeded Mr Coxhead, who has left the colony for California, and proofs of his — Mr Muir's— proficiency with the camera and plates may be inspected in the show cases in the premises, Esk street. A number of excellent pictures can be seen — without the trouble of going upstairs even, in the entrance to the studio, and for several days these have attracted the notice of passers. They are the work of the new proprietor, and bear out his reputation for grouping and posing. The lighting is also very soft and varied, some bold Rembrandtesque effects being conspicuous.
